Punta della dogana, Dorsoduro (Venice)

The transformation project required a series of targeted partial demolitions, determined by both the survey results and the needs of the building’s new function. During the works, all damaged non-load-bearing walls, unsafe ceilings, unfit floors, and overhead walkways, no longer needed after the change of use, were removed. Particular attention was paid to the masonry on the ground floor, made of bricks and severely damaged by the action of brackish water. After an accurate analysis, the compromised walls were partially demolished, followed by their reconstruction using the pre-existing Bolognini brick type to preserve the building's authenticity and style. the marmorino plasterwork present throughout the lowering was restored, giving a renewed and cared-for appearance to the entire exhibition space. This intervention restored Punta della Dogana to its former splendour, transforming it into a prestigious exhibition space where art and architecture come together to create a unique experience in the heart of Venice. Palazzo Grassi - Pinault Collection, one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in Venice, has also entrusted Impresa Costruzioni Bergamo with the creation of the artwork ‘Mothabeng’ by African artist Dineo Seshee Bopape. This extraordinary installation is part of the exhibition ‘Icônes’ (01.04.2023 - 26.11.2023), hosted in the exhibition spaces designed by Tadao Ando for Punta della Dogana. Within this context of great artistic value, Impresa Costruzioni Bergamo worked on the construction of a unique hut, built with clay, straw, earth and herbs, following the traditional building techniques of African peoples. The structure offers an unprecedented sensory experience: lying inside and contemplating the glimmers of light filtering through the cracks in the dried earth roof, listening to background voices and smelling the scent of herbs. This extraordinary project skilfully combines contemporary art with ancient African building traditions, creating a unique and immersive experience for visitors to the exhibition.
