Typical of Venetian architecture, the altana is a wooden platform built on the roof of a building and supported by masonry pillars. The structure, open at the sides, is protected by a wooden roof and parapet and may vary in size depending on the design. Access to the roof-terrace is usually provided by the dormer window, another characteristic element of Venetian buildings.
